Facial Recognition Technology Introduced for Check-In at Kolkata Airport

According to an official statement, passengers traveling through Kolkata airport can now use facial recognition technology to check in for their flights and board planes. ‘DigiYatra‘ is rolling out to enhance the passenger experience by providing a seamless entry and embarkation process for air travelers, making this possible. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is the fourth airport in India to offer this service. Other airports are following Delhi, Bengaluru, and Varanasi. These airports launched DigiYatra in December last year.

Kolkata airport started trials of this technology on February 21, and 9,206 passengers have used the facility till Thursday. Passengers traveling through Air India, IndiGo, GoFirst, Vistara, and SpiceJet also can use DigiYatra at departure gates 2B and 3A, security hold areas 1, 2, and 3, and boarding gates 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23.

The Kolkata airport director, C Pattabhi, inaugurated the facility and stated that it would lead to fast passenger movement, paperless travel, more security, and improved airport infrastructure. This would enable passengers to spend more time shopping, enjoying food and beverages, and other services at the airport.

Therefore, to avail of the service, a passenger must register their details on the DigiYatra app using Aadhaar-based validation and a self-image capture. The airport scans the boarding pass and shares the credentials, which is the next step.

At the e-gate, a registered passenger has to scan the bar-coded boarding pass, and the facial recognition system installed at the e-gate will validate the passenger’s identity and travel document. The passenger can enter the airport through the e-gate once they have completed the process. The data shared by passengers for DigiYatra will be stored in an encrypted format in a decentralized manner.

DigiYatra is a step towards a more streamlined and hassle-free travel experience for passengers, and its successful implementation at four airports in the country is a testament to its effectiveness.
