Air travel to become Expensive from January 1

In order to improve Air Travel regional connectivity, Govt has implemented 2% cess on air tickets from January 1 in the country. In the recently-released draft National Civil Aviation Policy, Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Nayan Choubey said the ministry would put the final document for approval before the Union Cabinet in December.
Defending the decision to impose the cess, which will lead to an increase in fares of passengers flying non- Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) and CAT IIA routes, Choubey said an extra Rs 100 on an air ticket costing Rs 5,000 was not a big amount considering benefits it will bring for millions of those living in remote areas with poor air connectivity.

“It will ensure 300 million middle class people start flying from 300 remote airports in the country. It is anybody’s call whether it (2% cess) is such a big amount to ask for considering that people in remote parts will become eligible to fly,” he said. Whether the 2% cess will be levied on base or overall fare will be decided in the final policy document.
